September 2022 Update

What a busy year it has been so far, and we want to thank the many customers, old & new, that have supported us.

We are always striving to maintain or improve the site and 2022 has already seen a lot of work carried out…

1. The Conservation Area had a much-welcomed revamp with the ponds being cleared of reeds and over-hanging trees and new fishing swims installed giving better accessibility to those customers wanting to hopefully get a bite or two. Customers simply enjoying the peace & tranquillity have been treated to numerous sightings of the Kingfishers throughout the summer too!

2. For our younger guests an adventure playground was installed in June in the Lakeside Field and has proved very popular.

3. The larger pool is surrounded with Alder trees that need to be kept under control. This year about one third of the Alder trees were removed as part of the rolling management programme recommended by the David Bellamy Conservation Award programme.

4. Wild swimming, kayak & paddle-boarding in the large pool has been extremely popular with families throughout the summer. To make their experience more enjoyable the jetty underwent work to stabilise it, the ladder was re-positioned and additional steps were added to assist with entering and leaving the water.

5. We also managed to spend some time on the lodges over the spring and early summer with new kitchens installed in the Ledbury 3 Lodge and Four Oaks Lodge, meaning the kitchen refurbishment plan in all our smaller lodges is now complete.

March 2022 Update

It’s been an exciting start to 2022 with lots of work going on in our lodges:

  • 3 lodges had new kitchens installed (Kites Nest VIP, Ledbury Lodge 2 and Ledbury VIP).
  • Ledbury Lodge 2 has also had a total bathroom make-over with a walk-in shower with low level shower tray and glass screen instead of a bath.
  • Kites Nest VIP has new modern style light fittings in the lounge area

We have more improvements planned for other lodges but these will be in the autumn now as the lodges are filled with customers.

Good news to end 2020!

This has been a challenging year for everyone so we wanted to end 2020 on a positive note. Share with you some good news! Tell you about some of the improvements we have made to our lodges during 2020 to make them better for you – our wonderful customers.

Every lodge has had a degree of TLC – some more than others, but our aim, as always, to give customers a better experience staying here at Woodside Lodges.

What have we been up to?

  • A huge chunk of work has been carried out on our three Springpool Lodges: they have all had their wooden floors stained giving them a fresh new look; they have all had new ovens and hobs fitted in the kitchens and the VIP lodge has had a new fridge-freezer; both Springpools 1 & 3 have had new carpets in the downstairs bedrooms and no.1 even had a new double bed to finish it off.
  • All the smaller 2 bedroom lodges have had their radiators refurbished and decking areas pressure cleaned giving them a smart new look.
The Ledbury VIP Lodge has had a new modern style gazebo erected over the hot tub – complete with pretty twinkling lights.
  • The Kites Nest VIP Lodge has a fabulous 2 berth hot tub installed on a covered decking area – complete with pretty twinkling lights that add to the romantic setting. A wonderful addition to complement the sauna and log burning stove and with great feedback from customers.

Starting 2021 on a high…!

A new hot tub is already on order for Springpools Lodge 3 and should arrive during January. It will certainly help with the increased demands from customers wanting spa breaks

Kingfisher Lodge, a spacious contemporary style 2 bedroom lodge has now been added to the letting fleet – full details will be on our website soon but get in touch if your are interested in booking.

Finally, we have worked hard throughout the year to make sure the site is Covid safe for all our guests. We have even more stringent cleaning & safety protocols than before and all guests, whether staying in our lodges, on the camp site, in the camping pods or bunkhouse can relax knowing we are covid secure.

We look forward to welcoming all our customers in 2021 – old and new.

Coronavirus (COVID-19) Notice

Last updated: 20th July 2021

July 19th sees a change in the Covid restrictions across England and there will no longer be a limit on the number of guests that can meet up. As ever safety is a huge priority to us and we will be keeping up with the following measures to help keep both our customers and staff safe:

  • Continue with covid cleaning protocols for our lodges
  • Enhanced cleaning throughout the day in all camping washroom areas
  • Hand sanitizer dispensers available in all high contact areas across the site, including reception & all camping washroom areas
  • Ask our staff and customers to continue to wear face masks in the reception & shop as it is only a small enclosed area

As always, we’ll keep you posted if and when anything changes. For now, we want to thank all our customers who have helped us bounce back after the difficulty of lockdown and can’t wait to meet you.

For those still looking for a staycation – keep in touch! Sadly some customers are having to cancel at short notice due to isolating so, although we may appear fully booked online for the dates you want to get away, we do often have late availability across all our accommodation types.

Woodside Lodges Groundwork Development

Recently the European Union has headlined almost every news bulletin across the country and it is no different here at Woodside Lodges – but for good reasons.

As part of our ongoing development plans we managed to secure some European LEADER grant funding to help us realise our plans earlier than would have been possible.  Over this winter the LEADER support has enabled us to be busy on many projects.

We’ve invested in a new, improved, safer entrance into the campsite; provided additional electric hook ups spread out across the Cider Mill field and Orchard Field plus fresh water points – improvements we have wanted to do for many years.  We’ve also added a new safer bin store and another fire point.

We’ve improved drainage in different areas around the site – a massive help during recent storms and particularly Storm Dennis, which saw many parts of Herefordshire flooded.

We’ve cleared the reeds and some of the saplings from the main Springpools lake giving better access for our keenest fishers and wild swimmers.

If you’re visiting this summer also look out for John on our shiny new tractor mower that we’ve got to help us  manage our 30 acres of grassland, lakes and areas of trees.

A less obvious improvement, but one that impacts on every customer to the site, is the upgrade to our sewage system so we now have enough capacity for even the busiest of bank holiday weekends.

We are now looking to the future.  The weather has been more unpredictable than previous winters and we are still busying ourselves with planting grass seed, turfing a few areas and planting some trees and hedging plants so that the site is looking good for our customers arriving from Easter onwards.  We were lucky enough to secure the LEADER funding and it has helped us to carry out some of this investment earlier than would have been possible.  It means we are now in a position to recruit an extra person to the Woodside Team and we are currently looking to find the right person to help us in our increasingly busy office.

All the Woodside Team look forward to welcoming you to our site and hearing your feedback on the improvements we’ve made.

Woodside Lodges Camping Overhaul!

Work will soon be underway to improve the camping experience for customers in 2020.  We will be laying electric cables and improving drainage to the site.

Cider Mill Field

We will be increasing the number of hook-ups along the full length of the field.  Previously all the hook-ups were at one end of the field making it difficult for customers to be pitched next to friends.  Now customers can choose for themselves when they book which end of the field they want to pitch.

As well as increasing the number of pitches we have also renamed the field to make it easier for customers when they book using the online system:

  • The half of the field furthest away from the entrance and nearest to the toilet blocks is now known as Cider Mill East. This half of the field only caters for customers that require electric hook-up.  There is no facility for non- electric pitches in this area.
  • The half of the field closest to the entrance is now known as Cider Mill West. This half of the field has mixed pitches and caters for anyone – both those wanting electric or those not wanting electric.  If you want to be with friends with different pitching requirements this is the end of the field for you.

Feedback from customers was that they enjoyed the informal character of the field, so this has been kept.  We still have no marked out pitches so you can choose how you want to pitch when you arrive, whatever end of the field you decide to stay on.

Orchard Field

Our original sloping camping field near reception is also being improved.  Additional hook-ups will be installed along the right-hand hedge and the entrance to the field will be reinforced to make it easier for customers to drive on and off.  This field is for customers requiring electric hook-up only.  There are no non electric pitches on this field.

Prices

To help with refurbishment costs we have increased the basic pitch price for 2020 by £2 per night.  All other prices, including camping extras, pod stays and bunkhouse stays, have been held at the current price …meaning no price increase for 3 years.

Book now… The online booking system is now live to book camping, pods or bunkhouse during 2020.

How to Stay Active

Looking for ideas to keep active to stay young?
Our blog below discusses how you can incorporate being active into your next break at Woodside!

#1 Learn

The art of learning can apply to all ages and keeping your brain engaged is an important part of being happy & healthy. There are plenty of wildlife spots around Woodside lodges where you can discover new creatures and habitats to learn about. Our team are passionate about the wildlife onsite, so if you have a question or are curious about something, just ask!

If you don’t feel like exploring amongst the critters you could visit one of the more well known attractions like Eastnor Castle to learn about the rich history that the castle has to offer. Or if history isn’t really your thing, you might visit the Malvern Hills GeoCentre where you can learn about the Geology of the hills, and even discover fossils that have been found over the years!

#2 Try new things

Being on holiday is a great time to try new things and get into a hobby that will keep you active. There are so many new activies available that you won’t be short of ideas when it comes to taking the plunge and trying something new.

Nordic walking is a great one as it’s a little different to your usual walking, plus it’s an all body activity so no muscle gets left out. Or maybe you want to do a life changing activity? These guys run outdoor activities of all kinds (like gorge walking, raft building & caving) which is a perfect way to start ticking off things on your bucket list. Or you could even take up horseriding! If you’re looking for something a little more relaxing, have you thought about llama trekking?

#3 Active lifestyle

It may seem obvious, but people who are active have reduced health risks compared to those who don’t, such as diabetes, depression & dementia. Discovering an active lifestyle helps improve our appetite, strengthen our body & ease day to day discomforts. Not only that, it can improve your mental wellbeing – especially activities like walking and outdoor exercise.

We have a few walking routes available from Woodside lodges and they all vary in ability. Maybe walking isn’t your cup of tea, but watersports might be, so if you’re looking for something a bit more intense why not try a days canoe trip? Or if you’re a keen cyclist, the Forest of Dean hosts plenty of bike trails for all the family, you can even hire the kit you need too!

Maybe you’ll find an activity that you love and will continue with it after your break with us. Active lifestlye = healthy mind & body!

#4 New Places

Discovering new places is a great way to stay active as there are so many different ways you can explore. Woodside Lodges is based on the outskirts of Ledbury, meaning we are a central point to plenty of interesting locations. Hereford, Worcester, Cheltenham, Gloucester and Birmingham are all within an hour’s journey of the town.

But if you would like to stay a little closer to home, you might wish to take a walk through Ledbury’s 17th Century town which is brimming with picturesque timber buildings, markets, independent shops & places to eat. Or you can cover more of the surrounding area with a guided walk of Ledbury & The Malvern Hills and see the area of Outstanding Natural Beauty up close.

What wildlife is there at Woodside Lodges?

How many will you see? Take a look at some of the animals below and download or print the activity sheet at the bottom of the page!

— Birds —

Buzzard

It is thought that the buzzard is now our most common bird of prey, taking over from the kestrel! You’ll see them gliding over the site.

Swan

The swans are the largest members of the waterfowl family and are one of the largest flying birds! The same swans have returned to Woodside each year to nest and raise their cygnets.

Heron

Grey herons are the largest birds most of us ever see in our garden their wing span is around 6ft!

Kingfisher

The kingfisher doesn’t have a whistling song, however it does have a distinctive shrill whistle. Listen for them in the Conservation Area.

Pheasant

Pheasants are not originally from Britain, rumour says that the Romans first brought them here.

Woodpeckers

The green woodpecker is the largest of the woodpeckers that are found in Britain. You can see both the green and greater spotted woodpeckers at Woodside.

— Land Animals —

Rabbit

Did you know that rabbits can turn their ears 180 degrees and can pinpoint the exact location of a sound?

Squirrel

Squirrels have four front teeth which will never stop growing throughout their fun lives!

Muntjac Deer

Did you now that Muntjac are a brown colour for most of the year and turn grey in winter?

Hedgehog

Did you know that Hedgehogs rely on hearing and smell because they don’t have very good eyesight?.

Fox

Foxes are omnivorous mammals that are really light on their feet and are often mistaken for other animals such as wolves & dogs!

Badger

Badgers have big bodies with short legs that are really good for digging burrows underground these are called a sett.

Help us Spot Creatures Old & New!

We have created an activity sheet which you can print and tick off as you go along. If you spot any new creatures that aren’t on the sheet, be sure to let the team know so they can be added!
